Eminem’s new album, Recovery, is a far-cry from the aggressive raps that we generally associate him with.
Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, told The Detroit News, in 'How Did Eminem's Recovery Have Such A Big Debut'; “Recovery offers more of an emotional connection for listeners………. I think Em made the kind of album that people were waiting for with Recovery” following the release of the album in June.
The album is inspired by the break-up in Eminem’s life. In contrast to his other works, the album predominately focuses on his admiration for his ex-wife; “It’s like an explosion every time I hold ya, I wasn’t joking when I told ya, you take my breath away, you’re a supernova and I’m a space bound rocket ship and your heart’s the moon, and I’m aiming right at you, right at you", in the song 'Space-Bound' from the album.
The album does feature some offensive and aggressive raps, but this is offset by heartbroken melodies.
The fact that this album is more emotional than any of his other albums might be due to the fact that it is the only album of Eminem’s that was created while he was sober.
Entertainment Weekly correspondent, Simon Vozick-Levinson said of Recovery, in 'How Did Eminem's Recovery Have Such A Big Debut'; “Recovery has a double meaning about his own sobriety and his own recovery and also about the economic climate. People want to believe in the idea of things getting better and making a fresh start.”
Artists and Music in ‘Recovery’ create balance of aggressive and heartfelt
Eminem features many different artists in this album, such as Rihanna, Kobe, LilWayne and Pink. These artists help to balance out the mix of angry and aggressive raps with tribute-style and heartbroken raps.
The use of music accompanying the raps in this album is also strikingly different to the music featured in Eminem’s past albums. It is much easier on the ear than the music accompanying any of his previous raps.
Eminem more mature
In the booklet accompanying the ‘Recovery’ album, Eminem says to his listeners; “This album is dedicated to anyone who is in a dark place trying to get out. Keep your head up…it does get better!”
Simon Vozick-Levinson said of Eminem, the album and the first single choice,"Not Afraid"in 'How Did Eminem's Recovery Have Such A Big Debut'; “Not Afraid was a smart choice, because it had the message that he’s older and wiser, that he’s grown up with his audience and he’s more mature than in the past.”
For anyone that is going through a break-up, this album provides the necessary blend of grief and anger.
Eminem has shown us that he can be a rapper and also be heartfelt.
